A jacob's ladder consists of two upright electrodes and a HV source. When an arc jumps across the electrodes near the bottom, it creates heat within its vicinity. The heat makes the arc rise slowly up to the top of the electrodes. Once it reaches the top, the arc disconnects, and the process repeats.
